I study groundwater and how it relates to water quality, surface water resources, groundwater-dependent ecosystems such as fisheries, and water supply. I use field studies and computer models to better understand the groundwater system in different places. The field studies can include collecting groundwater levels, water chemistry, and temperature. I also use our understanding of the geology and physical setting to develop computer models of how and where groundwater flows. One tool I’ve recently used is a simple sensor that records water temperature. Because groundwater is colder than summer surface water, these sensors can be used to make inferences about where groundwater is discharging to surface water.

I enjoy the challenge of exploring a new location in Wisconsin and learning how the groundwater system works. I also like doing work that will provide a real benefit to resource managers and, ultimately, those who use the groundwater resource.

Current projects

My current projects include

  • a study of seepage lake flooding,
  • an investigation of hydrogeology in a poorly understood area of northern Wisconsin, and
  • collecting groundwater levels in a remote area of the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest in northern Wisconsin.
