Outcrop Descriptions

Wisconsin’s geologic outcrops

Beginning in 1976, geologists at WGNHS and their colleagues prepared over 100 descriptions of outcrops from around the state. These outcrops showed important or typical geologic formations, features, and characteristics. Their locations are pinned on the map below. Green pins have photos; blue pins do not. Click on a pin for access to the outcrop descriptions (PDFs).

These outcrop descriptions are intended to be used to construct field trips. In the years since the descriptions were written, access to these sites may have changed. Outcrops on busy highways, in quarries, or in gravel pits may be hazardous. Remember: Always get permission before entering or crossing private property. Be respectful and be careful.
