Description:
Abstract:
This dataset is the digital version of the map titled "Pleistocene Geology of Kewaunee County, Wisconsin." This map is published as Bulletin 104, Plate 1 by Lee Clayton and is available from the Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey (WGNHS).This dataset provides a spatial assessment of the unconsolidated surface sediment across the entire county including—in some cases—interpretation of underlying sediments as well.
Purpose:
This dataset was produced as part of a project to map the unconsolidated surficial materials in Kewaunee County, Wisconsin. Understanding the surficial deposits, and the geologic processes that produced them, is an important resource for land-use planning decisions. Note that this dataset was developed for presentation and interpretation at the 1:100,000 scale, and may not be accurate for site-specific applications.

County Boundaries (ctyppoly.shp) and Hydrography (hydroarea.shp and hydroline.shp) shapefiles. The data is derived from the U.S. Census Bureau's 1990 TIGER/Line files.
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
1. Vectorization. Geologic line features were drawn onto USGS 1:24,000-scale quadrangle maps, transcribed to mylar, scanned, and then raster-traced to obtain vector-based features. The digital vector data were projected from the original coordinate system to WTM 83/91. These data along with county boundary and shorelines (selected from WDNR GEODISC 3.0) were loaded into the geodatabase. Following correction of topological errors, polygonal geologic map units were constructed from the unit boundary features.
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
2. Quality Control. The resultant digital vector data were compared to the original paper map and check plot methods to ensure all map data were correctly captured. In addition, attribute values were validated to be within the appropriate domain, and feature length and area measures were checked for appropriate values.
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
3. Data Export. Vector data were exported from geodatabase to shapefile format for digital publication.

Glacial sediment. Thin till of last advance, typically no more than a few meters thick, overlying older till. Smooth, fairly nondescript glacial topography, lacking collapse hummocks or with inconspicuous hummocks no more than a few meters high, draped over preexisting older glacial and nonglacial topography, somewhat modified by postglacial erosion that tended to reestablish the drainage pattern existing before the last glacial advance.
