Title:
An inventory of springs in Wisconsin: sites investigated but not surveyed
Geospatial_Data_Presentation_Form: vector digital data
Series_Information:
Series_Name: Bulletin
Issue_Identification: 113
Description:
Abstract:
This dataset includes all of the sites investigated, but not surveyed, during the 2014-2017 project to inventory Wisconsin springs that discharge at rates of at least approximately 0.25 cubic feet per second. The dataset documents efforts to locate qualifying springs, and provides explanations for why features were not surveyed. Reasons that the sites were not surveyed include site access problems, and spring flow rate less than the minimum discharge criterion for the inventory. The point features represent approximate site locations; attributes include the original source for the possible spring site, and the reason the site was not included in the inventory. The methodology and results are documented in an accompanying report.
Purpose:
This dataset was produced as part of a project to inventory springs in Wisconsin that discharge at rates of approximately 0.25 cubic feet per second or more at the time of the inventory. Understanding spring hydrology is important because springs contribute water to streams, lakes, and wetlands, provide wildlife habitat, and in some cases supply water to fish hatcheries, private residences, and agricultural activities. In addition to the information about the surveyed springs, the project also compiled data for springs that were investigated but not surveyed, and data for a limited number of groundwater-fed ponds. The methodology, results, and full explanation of dataset attributes are documented in the accompanying report: Swanson, S.K., Graham, G.E., and Hart, D.J., 2019, An inventory of springs in Wisconsin: Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey Bulletin 113, 24 p. The project was conducted by the Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey and Beloit College, and funded by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.

Logical_Consistency_Report:
This dataset includes all of the sites investigated, but not surveyed, during the 2014-2017 project to inventory Wisconsin springs that discharge at rates of at least approximately 0.25 cubic feet per second. It is not a comprehensive collection of spring features in Wisconsin. The point locations of the features were derived from a variety of sources of varying resolution and accuracy, some providing very generalized locations.

Process_Description:
In 2007, the Wisconsin Wildlife Federation (WWF) compiled a database of locations and attributes of more than 10,000 features from a variety of sources that identified springs, seepage lakes, wetlands, or dry depressions at some time in Wisconsin’s past. The information compiled by the WWF served as an important resource for locating possible spring sites during this project. Topographic maps, the U.S. Geological Survey Geographic Names Information System, other scientific studies, and the expertise of local land managers, fishery and wildlife biologists, foresters, county extension agents, private property owners, and others were also utilized to identify springs that might be relevant to the investigation. The methodology and results are documented in an accompanying report.
