Description:
Abstract:
This dataset is the digital version of the map titled "Bedrock geology of Portage County, Wisconsin." The map was originally published in analog form as Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey Information Circular 53, plate 1 (Map 86-3), by J.K. Greenberg and B.A. Brown (1986). This dataset shows the distribution of rock types from Archean to Cambrian age at the bedrock surface in Portage County. The accompanying explanation provides a brief description of the rocks, their relative ages, and structural relationships.
Purpose:
This dataset was created to provide a digital representation of the original analog map.

Data_Quality_Information:
Attribute_Accuracy:
Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
Attribute accuracy was tested by comparing the source materials to hard copy plots and symbolized on-screen displays of the digitized data.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
Geologic line features and geologic unit area features were validated against geodatabase topology rules to ensure spatial consistency. Attribute values for fields "Type," "Feature," "Conf," and "UnitCode" were verified to be within the appropriate domain, and feature length and area measures were checked for appropriate values based on map scale of data.
Completeness_Report:
These data represent the authors' interpretation of the bedrock geology of Portage County and were digitized from analog sources. See Plate 1, IC 53 for additional information.

Data were digitized as they appeared on the original publication. However, instead of representing zones of foliation as wavy lines as on the original map, they are represented as point features of vertical foliation.

Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
The positional accuracy of the features is based on their compilation to base maps that meet National Map Accuracy Standards. Geologic unit area features are bounded by geologic line features having a confidence qualifier which includes a positional accuracy component. Overall, these data are judged to be accurate at 1:100,000 scale and not intended for site-specific use.

1. Image Capture. An original paper copy of Plate 1, IC 53 (also labeled as Map 86-3) was scanned and saved as a color TIFF image. The TIFF image was then rectified to Wisconsin Transverse Mercator NAD 1983 HARN (WTM 83/91) coordinates using ESRI ArcGIS software, referencing 1:100,000-scale county boundary corners in CTYPPOLY.

2. Vectorization. Existing digital vector data (PTCGBR) was projected from the original coordinate system to WTM 83/91 and imported to the production geodatabase. These unit boundaries were appended to the county boundary from CYTPPOLY. Additional features and attribute data were digitized and entered from ic53p1.tif.

Overall, data were digitized as they appeared on the original publication. However, instead of representing zones of foliation as wavy lines as on the original map, they are represented as point features of vertical foliation.
