Description:

Abstract:
This data set contains polygon, line, and point features depicting the approximate groundwater divides, major surface-water divides, water-table elevation contours and locations of wells in Trempealeau County, Wisconsin.
Purpose:
The water-table contours, well locations, and surface and groundwater divides presented in this map constitute a part of the data compiled and analyzed for Trempealeau County Groundwater Resource Investigation, a joint project of the Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey and the Trempealeau County Board of Supervisors. The purpose of this project was to compile and interpret hydrogeologic data for Trempealeau County. The water-table map is a summary of available water-level data and it depicts, in a general way, the direction of shallow groundwater flow. Knowledge of the shape and elevation of the water table is critical to understanding groundwater flow patterns through aquifers. This information can be used by those interested in soil- and water-resource and land-use planning. It is intended for use at the published scale of 1:100,000 and should not be considered definitive for site-specific applications.
Supplemental Information:
Many wells in Trempealeau County are completed in sandstone (68%) or a mixture of sandstone and shale (21%). In the major river valleys, the sand and gravel aquifer provides adequate water supply (11% of the wells). The shallow groundwater system appears to be a single unconfined aquifer at the scale of this water-table map (1:100,000). The water table closely mimics topography, suggesting direct hydraulic connection between the sandstone and dolomite and the overlying surficial deposits.

All of the major creeks and rivers in Trempealeau County flow into the Mississippi River. The Trempealeau River drains much of the county; however, there are three minor surface-water divides in Trempealeau County that separate the basins of the Buffalo River, Beaver Creek, and Black River from that of the Trempealeau River.

The three groundwater divides in Trempealeau County approximately coincide with the surface-water divides. Over much of Trempealeau County, groundwater follows short flow paths from upland recharge areas to discharge areas along the Mississippi River and its tributaries--the Buffalo, Trempealeau, and Black Rivers, and Beaver Creek.

Digitize Surface-Water Points
Surface-water features were identified and representative points marked with color-coded symbols on 1:24,000 topographic maps. The points were transfered to a mylar overlay and digititized to create separate coverages. The elevation for each point was the ID number while digitizing. Two streams coverages were created--one for points where streams and topographic contours cross (StreamC) and another for points placed at equal intervals in terms of water levels, or approximately every 1/2 mile or so, along streams. The elevations were interpolated between contours. The other surface-water coverages created were lakes and wetlands. One point was located in the middle of the lake. If lakes are more than 1/2 mile in length in any direction, points were added to delineate the shoreline. These were placed at approximately 1/4 mile intervals. Points from wetlands that are greater than 1 square mile in area and those that border large bodies of water were included.

After all wells with Well Construction Reports were located on topographic maps, they were assigned a unique well identification number (WELLID) that is a combination of the WGNHS topographic quad number (4 digits) with a suffix that was assigned sequentially. Wells were numbered by sections from west to east and north to south. Sometimes a prefix--the county Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) code--was added to the WELLID for the item FULLWELLID.

The well location and open interval were added. The diameter of the open interval was used to calculate hydraulic conductivity from the specific capacity data. For bedrock holes the well was frequently left open and the drillhole diameter was used for the open interval. If the well was completed in unlithified material, then a well screen was the open interval. Depth to bedrock was recorded, or left blank for wells not reaching bedrock. If the driller reported rock over unlithified material, the depth to firm rock was recorded.
