Title:
Previously mapped bedrock outcrops in the Park Falls Unit of the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest, Wisconsin
Geospatial_Data_Presentation_Form: vector digital data
Description:
Abstract:
This dataset contains locations of outcrops taken from a map by F.H. King dated 1879 "Map of a Portion of the Upper Flambeau Valley", In Geology of Wisconsin, 1873-1879, Volume IV, Part VI, Pages 585-615. Locations of outcrops shown on the 1879 map were digitized in 2011 by K. Bradbury. Locations are somewhat approximate because the 1879 map does not conform to modern base mapping. Bedrock outcrops were used along with other data to develop a bedrock elevation map, as documented in an accompanying summary report available from the Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey.
Purpose:
This dataset was produced as part of a project to assess groundwater resources across the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest. Groundwater is an important resource for the forest, and a more comprehensive understanding of this resource can help guide land management decisions. This dataset contains locations of outcrops along the Flambeau River taken from a map by F.H. King dated 1879. Knowledge of bedrock outcrops helps to constrain interpretations of the bedrock surface, which is important for developing a conceptual framework for the hydrogeologic system. The datasets produced as part of this project are divided by location into four groups, corresponding to the four main National Forest Units: Medford, Nicolet, Park Falls, and Washburn/Great Divide. This dataset is located in the Park Falls Unit.

Completeness_Report:
Locations are approximate only. The original 1879 base map may not be accurate, as the course of the Flambeau River does not exactly agree with present-day mapping. In digitizing the outcrops, the points were moved to logical spots along the present-day mapped river.
