Depth to bedrock (feet) in the Park Falls Unit of the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest, Wisconsin
- Geospatial_Data_Presentation_Form: vector digital data
- Description:
-
- Abstract:
-
This dataset consists of contour lines showing the depth to bedrock, defined as distance in feet from the land surface to the top of bedrock, denoted by the attribute field “contour.” The dataset was created using a combination of well construction reports, geophysical surveying, and previously published data on bedrock outcrops. The methodology and results are documented in an accompanying summary report available from the Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey. This dataset was developed from data of varying map scales and may not be accurate for site-specific applications.
- Purpose:
-
This dataset was produced as part of a project to assess groundwater resources across the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest. Groundwater is an important resource for the forest, and a more comprehensive understanding of this resource can help guide land management decisions.
Depth-to-bedrock maps show the thickness and distribution of unconsolidated deposits which influence groundwater flow and availability. Combined with geologic and water-table maps, depth-to-bedrock maps can be used to develop a conceptual framework for the hydrogeologic system.
The datasets produced as part of this project are divided by location into four groups, corresponding to the four main National Forest Units: Medford, Nicolet, Park Falls, and Washburn/Great Divide. This dataset is located in the Park Falls Unit.

This dataset provides the interpreted bedrock depth contours based on available point data of varying quality and scale. The point datasets are also included in the geodatabase: geophysical measurements (PF_GeophysGEM2_WGNHS_2016 and PF_GeophysEM31_WGNHS_2016), historic outcrops (PF_HistOutcrop_WGNHS_2016), and records with non-null bedrock elevation values in the WCR dataset (PF_LocWCRs_WGNHS_2016). There are large areas of little or no data. The accuracy of the map is unknown in these areas, whereas the accuracy increases with the concentration of data points. The contours were created with the intent of honoring the available data points as closely as possible. However, spatial interpolation of poorly-distributed point data can lead to artificial bullseyes that are purely an artifact of the processes used to create the contours. These artifacts have been manually edited where possible, but represent an additional uncertainty in the dataset. The contour interval was selected to reflect the interpreted accuracy of the input data.
