A geophysical survey was conducted to confirm locations of near-surface bedrock near the intersection of Gates Lake Road and Forest Road 137 in the Park Falls Unit of the CNNF during the summer of 2011. The survey was conducted using the EM31 and EM34 conductivity meters manufactured by Geonics Limited and the GEM2 earth conductivity meter manufactured by Terraplus. Both instruments output results of apparent conductivity in millisiemens per meter (mS/m). This dataset presents the results of the EM31 and EM34 conductivity meters.
The following are from the Geonics Limited website:
"The EM31 maps geologic variations, groundwater contaminants, or any subsurface feature associated with changes in ground conductivity using a patented electromagnetic inductive technique that allows measurements without electrodes or ground contact. With this inductive method, surveys can be carried out under most geologic conditions including those of high surface resistivity such as sand, gravel, and asphalt…The effective depth of exploration is about six metres, making it ideal for geotechnical and environmental site characterization." (<http://www.geonics.com/html/em31-mk2.html>)
"Using the same inductive method as the EM31, the EM34 uses three intercoil spacings - 10, 20 and 40 m - to provide variable depths of exploration down to 60 metres. With three intercoil spacings and two dipole modes (horizontal as shown, and vertical) at each spacing, vertical soundings can be obtained. In the vertical dipole (horizontal coplanar) mode, the EM34 is very sensitive to vertical geologic anomalies and, as a consequence, is widely used for groundwater exploration in fractured and faulted bedrock." (<http://www.geonics.com/html/em34-3.html>)
Survey results and interpretation are documented in an accompanying summary report available from the Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey.
- Purpose:
-
This dataset was produced as part of a project to assess groundwater resources across the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest. Groundwater is an important resource for the forest, and a more comprehensive understanding of this resource can help guide land management decisions.
Geophysical surveys evaluate changes in ground conductivity and therefore can be used to confirm areas of shallow bedrock. Knowledge of bedrock outcrops helps to constrain interpretations of the bedrock surface, which is important for developing a conceptual framework for the hydrogeologic system.
The datasets produced as part of this project are divided by location into four groups, corresponding to the four main National Forest Units: Medford, Nicolet, Park Falls, and Washburn/Great Divide. This dataset is located in the Park Falls Unit.
