Water table elevation contours (feet) interpreted from point data in the Park Falls Unit of the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest, Wisconsin

- Description:

- Abstract:
-
Contour line attribute values report elevation of the water table in feet above mean sea level. This dataset was created through re-interpolation of water table contours digitized from existing maps, primarily WGNHS Miscellaneous Map 49 (Cates, K.J., and W.A. Batten, 1999, Generalized water-table elevation map of Price County, Wisconsin, scale 1:100,000). Additional data for Vilas County was provided by WGNHS Miscellaneous Publication 89-1 (Patterson, G.L., 1989, Water resources of Vilas County, WI, scale 1:100,000). Overall, this water table map is representative of the source maps and is consistent with regional patterns.
- Purpose:
-
This dataset was produced as part of a project to assess groundwater resources across the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest. Groundwater is an important resource for the forest, and a more comprehensive understanding of this resource can help guide land management decisions.
Water table maps show the elevation of the water table in feet above mean sea level. These generalized water table contours were re-interpolated from previously published maps which were created by interpolating point measurements of the water table. This map was used primarily to obtain a preliminary estimate of saturated aquifer thickness.
The datasets produced as part of this project are divided by location into four groups, corresponding to the four main National Forest Units: Medford, Nicolet, Park Falls, and Washburn/Great Divide. This dataset is located in the Park Falls Unit.

This dataset presents information re-interpolated from existing source datasets and reflect the completeness of those maps. While it is a reasonable approximation of the regional water table, useful for estimations of saturated aquifer thickness, it should not be used for groundwater flow studies. Horizontal accuracy of these data depend upon the horizontal accuracy of the source maps, deemed to accurate at a map scale of 1:100,000.
