Abstract:

These springs were surveyed in 2006 as part of the study entitled "Assessing the Ecological Status and Vulnerability of Springs in Wisconsin." Spring locations were recorded in the field using a GPS unit.

Purpose:

These data were developed as part of the project entitled "Assessing the Ecological Status and Vulnerability of Springs in Wisconsin." The project was funded by the University of Wisconsin Water Resources Institiute and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.

The dataset provides locations for the 28 springs that were surveyed in 2006 for the project "Assessing the Ecological Status and Vulnerability of Springs in Wisconsin." Some of these springs were also surveyed by the Wisconsin Conservation Department in 1958 for the Spring Survey of Iowa County. The "SITECODE" of each spring uniquely identifies the feature across both survey datasets.

The position of each spring was measured using a hand-held Garmin GPS unit. The accuracy of the measurements are approximately +/- 5 meters. For the accuracy of each measurement, please see the associated Springs Access database (GPS and Geology table).

The position of each spring was measured using a handheld Garmin GPS unit. Positions were measured as close to the spring orifice as possible. Coordinates were downloaded from the GPS unit and imported to ArcGIS.

The first two digits of the SITECODE are the county code (25). The following four digits are the spring number. Springs are numbered consecutively as they appear in the Spring Survey of Iowa County conducted by the Wisconsin Conservation Department (WCD) in 1958. If a spring was not included in the WCD survey, it was numbered consecutively (starting with 407) in the order that it was found in the field.
