Description:
Abstract:
This raster dataset provides an estimate of the distribution of groundwater recharge in a year of average precipitation, expressed in inches per year, for Columbia County, Wisconsin. The spatial distribution of recharge depends upon soil characteristics, land-use patterns, and topography. The dataset was created by simulating the fate of precipitation and snowmelt on the land surface and within the soil zone using a soil-water balance (SWB) model for a year of approximately average precipitation (1981).
Purpose:
These data were produced as part of a project to assess groundwater resources in Columbia County, Wisconsin. Groundwater is an important resource for the county, and understanding the amount and distribution of recharge can help guide land-use planning decisions. Note that this dataset was developed from data of varying map scales and may not be accurate for site-specific applications.

Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
Raster cell values indicate mean annual groundwater recharge in inches per year as calculated by a computer model. While general comparisons of model inputs to computed recharge indicated consistent results, no extensive comparisons of specific input raster values to model inputs and calculations were completed. Overall, the general spatial distribution of recharge is consistent with regional soil characteristics and land use patterns data, and the temporal distribution is representative of the climate record.
Completeness_Report:
Surface water, as mapped in the land cover dataset, was removed from the final raster dataset. These areas are problematic to accurately represent in the SWB model because open water does not necessarily or typically recharge groundwater.

Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
Horizontal accuracy of these data depend upon the horizontal accuracy of the SWB model input datasets.

SWB—A Modified Thornthwaite-Mather Soil-Water-Balance Code for Estimating Groundwater Recharge
Source_Contribution:
The soil-water balance (SWB) computer code calculates groundwater recharge by use of commonly available GIS data layers in combination with tabular climatological data. The code is based on a modified Thornthwaite-Mather soil-water-balance approach, with components of the soil-water balance calculated at a daily timestep. Recharge calculations are made on a rectangular grid of computational elements that may be easily imported into a regional groundwater-flow model.

DEM data provided input for the flow direction calculations used by the SWB model.
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
Input to the SWB model consisted of daily climate records for the model period and four map data grids for the model extent: topography, soil hydrologic groups, soil water storage, and land use. Climate records for the Portage, Wisconsin, station were obtained from MRCC and reviewed for completeness. The model extent included Columbia County as well as portions of surrounding counties to eliminate any edge effects. The spatial resolution of the model was 30 meters, corresponding to the resolution of the elevation input data. A standard flow direction calculation was applied to a 30-meter digital elevation model (DEM) from the US Geological Survey's National Elevation Dataset. Before the final calculation of the flow direction input grid, a standard fill routine was applied to the DEM to correct for the fact that DEMs typically include erroneous depressions that can adversely influence surface flow routing. Digital soil data from the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) Soil Survey Geographic (SSURGO) Database was used for two input datasets to the model, hydrologic group and available water storage. Hydrologic group is a classification of the infiltration potential of a soil map unit, and is used by the recharge model to calculate runoff. Available water storage, a measure of the amount of water held in a specified soil thickness, is used by the model for soil-zone moisture accounting. Soil map unit data was acquired for each county within the model, merged to a regional dataset, and processed to obtain the two model input grids. Land-use and land cover data are used in calculations of interception, runoff, evapotranspiration, and for determination of rooting zone depth. The WISCLAND dataset provided the land cover information for the county, and the land cover categories have already been parameterized for use in the SWB model. Seamless data grids for the four map inputs were generated from these source datasets for input to the model. Climate data was input as daily precipitation and temperature observations for 1981. The model was run with the output reported as total annual recharge in inches per year. Finally, areas of surface water were reclassified to "no data" as these are difficult to accurately represent in the SWB model.
