Description:
Abstract:
This dataset is the digital version of the map titled "Preliminary Quaternary Geology of Grant County, Wisconsin." This map is published as an open-file report (WOFR2012-06) by Eric C. Carson and is available from the Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey. This dataset provides a spatial assessment of the unconsolidated surface sediment across the entire county including—in some cases—interpretation of underlying sediments as well. The dataset was created by a combination of field mapping, core sample collection, and aerial photograph interpretation. These data represent work performed by the Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey and are released to the open files in the interest of making the information readily available. The data have not been extensively reviewed for conformity with the Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey standards and nomenclature.
Purpose:
This dataset was produced as part of a project to map the unconsolidated surficial materials in Grant County, Wisconsin. Understanding the surficial deposits, and the geologic processes that produced them, is an important resource for land-use planning decisions. Note that this dataset was developed for presentation and interpretation at the 1:100,000 scale, and may not be accurate for site-specific applications.
Supplemental_Information:
These data represent work performed by the Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey and are released to the open files in the interest of making the information readily available. The data have not been extensively reviewed for conformity with the Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey standards and nomenclature.

Process_Step:
Process_Description:
1. Vectorization. Geologic contacts were digitized on-screen using USGS 1:24,000-scale Digital Raster Graphics (DRGs) as a guide to obtain vector-based features. These data along with county boundary and shorelines (selected from WiDNR) were loaded into the geodatabase. Following correction of topological errors, polygonal geologic map units were constructed from the unit boundary features.
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
2. Quality Control. The resultant digital polygonal data were proofed using check plot methods to ensure all map data were correctly captured. In addition, attribute values were validated to be within the appropriate domain, and feature length and area measures were checked for appropriate values.
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
3. Data Export. Polygonal data were exported from geodatabase to shapefile format for digital publication.

Alluvial sediment of the Elderon-phase terrace. Sand or gravelly sand, at least a few meters thick up to 15 m thick, deposited by streams carrying meltwater from the margins of the Laurentide Ice Sheet during the Elderon phase of the late Wisconsin glaciation. Occurs as terraces formed during subsequent down-cutting during the latest Wisconsin and Holocene.

Alluvial sediment of the Bridgeport terrace. Sand or gravelly sand, at least a few meters thick up to 15 m thick, deposited by streams carrying meltwater from the margins of the Laurentide Ice Sheet during the late Wisconsin glaciation. Occurs as remnants of the Bridgeport terrace; the terrace surface is likely largely underlain by a bedrock strath.

Enumerated_Domain_Value_Definition:
Coarse-grained colluvium. Unsorted slope sediment, derived from erosion of Paleozoic bedrock and windblown silt from upland surfaces moving downslope due to gravity. Typically associated with bedrock incision by major streams, and occurring on relatively steep slopes adjacent to major stream systems and deposits.

Windblown. Loess on Paleozoic bedrock. Windblown silt, more than 1.5 m thick; generally thickest in western areas (as much as 15 m) and thinning toward the east. Noncalcareous, unbedded, and massive; shows evidence of soil formation. Primarily composed of the Peoria, Roxana, and Loveland Members of the Keiler Formation. Roxana Member commonly contains abundant spruce fragments and charcoal. Although distribution is patchy and uncertain due to the thickness of the loess, heavily weathered residual clay of the Rountree Formation, derived from underlying Paleozoic bedrock, is common at the base.

Windblown. Loess on till. Windblown silt, typically more than 5 m thick. Noncalcareous, unbedded, and massive, shows evidence of soil formation. Primarily composed of the Peoria, Roxana, and Loveland Members of the Keiler Formation. Roxana Member commonly contains abundant spruce fragments and charcoal. Deposited on patchy, discontinuous pre-Illinoian till; occurrence confined to western Grant County, which was the easternmost extent of pre-Illinoian ice flowing from Minnesota and Iowa.
