Description:
Abstract:
This dataset is the digital version of the map titled "Preliminary Quaternary Geology of Columbia, Green Lake, and Marquette Counties, Wisconsin." This map is published as an open-file report (WOFR2015-01) by Thomas S. Hooyer, William N. Mode, Lee Clayton, and John W. Attig and is available from the Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey. This dataset provides a spatial assessment of the unconsolidated surface sediment across the entire three-county area including—in some cases—interpretation of underlying sediments as well. The dataset was created by a combination of field mapping, core sample collection, and aerial photograph interpretation. These data represent work performed by the Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey (WGNHS) and are released to the open files in the interest of making the information readily available. The data have not been extensively reviewed for conformity with the Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey standards and nomenclature.
Purpose:
This dataset was produced as part of a project to map the unconsolidated surficial materials in Columbia, Green Lake, and Marquette Counties, Wisconsin. Understanding the surficial deposits, and the geologic processes that produced them, is an important resource for land-use planning decisions. Note that this dataset was developed for presentation and interpretation at the 1:100,000 scale, and may not be accurate for site-specific applications.
Supplemental_Information:
These data represent work performed by the Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey and are released to the open files in the interest of making the information readily available. The data have not been extensively reviewed for conformity with the Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey standards and nomenclature.

Process_Step:
Process_Description:
1. Point capture. Geologic point features were drawn onto USGS 1:24,000-scale topographic series maps, transcribed to mylar, scanned, and digitized to obtain point-based features. The digital point data were projected from the original coordinate system to WTM 83/91. These data were imported into a geodatabase.
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
2. Quality Control. The resultant digital point data were compared to the original paper map and check plot methods to ensure all map data were correctly captured. In addition, attribute values were validated to be within the appropriate domain.
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
3. Data Export. Point data were exported from geodatabase to shapefile format for digital publication.
