Title:
Generalized water-table elevation map for Bayfield County, Wisconsin; well points (2017; 1:100,000 scale)
Geospatial_Data_Presentation_Form: vector digital data
Description:
Abstract:
These point features represent locations of 3360 water supply wells in Bayfield County, Wisconsin. A well database including wells in Bayfield County was previously developed for other projects (Mauel and others, 2010). The data were derived from Well Construction Reports (WCRs) submitted by well drillers to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. The WCRs represent wells drilled from 1988 through 2010, plus some older wells that provide public water supply. The WCRs also contain information recorded by the driller about the well location; depth of well and casing, liner, or screen; observed geologic materials; and water level in the well. For this database, initial point locations were determined using latitude/longitude coordinates, the street address of the property where the well was drilled, or the PLSS information recorded by the well driller in combination with the owner's name and/or the street or road where the well was constructed. Each point was inspected individually, placed on the structure(s) referenced in the well construction report, and then given a "Location Confidence" (LocConf) that signifies the estimated accuracy of the point location relative to the actual physical location of the well according to the information in the well construction report. After all the points had been individually inspected, an elevation value was attached to each point from a 5-foot resolution LIDAR-derived digital elevation model (DEM). As part of the current Bayfield County project, wells were categorized by aquifer type (e.g. sand, sandstone, granite), and the presence or absence of fine-grained geologic sediment overlying the well screen. This information is useful in evaluating the susceptibility of wells to surface contamination.A subset of 2461 shallow wells was used to help interpret the water table (plate 1). Water levels in these wells reflect the water table with varying degrees of accuracy. Wells with shallowest depths are most likely to represent the water table. A value of 1 in the field “WT_well” indicates wells that could be used to help refine the map.The methodology and results are documented in an accompanying summary report available from the Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey.
Purpose:
These data accompany the Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey Open-File Report 2017-02. Plate 1 of this report, "Generalized water-table elevation map for Bayfield County, Wisconsin," was developed using information from wells in Bayfield County, previously published maps of surficial and bedrock geology, and an existing groundwater flow model. Well information was also used to evaluate characteristics that can influence the well’s susceptibility to contamination originating at or near the land surface. The compilation and interpretation of data was intended to support discussions and decisions surrounding land use in Bayfield County.
Four datasets accompany the report: water-table contours, groundwater divides, groundwater flow lines, and well points. This dataset consists of the well points.

This project was completed by the Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey (WGNHS), UW-Extension, with support from the Bayfield County Health Department.
The well database compilation was completed by Stephen Mauel, GISP, a GIS Specialist at the Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey (WGNHS): Mauel, S.W., Pederson, E., Schoephoester, P.R., 2010, Geodatabase of water wells in Bayfield County, Wisconsin: Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey geodatabase.
Well data are from Well Construction Reports (WCRs) submitted to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources mainly between 1988 and 2010.
Water table contours were developed using a groundwater model from the following report: Fehling, A.C., Bradbury, K.R., Schoephoester, P.R., Mauel, S., Leaf, A.T., Hunt, R.J., Juckem, P.F., and Pruitt, A., In Review, Characterization of groundwater resources in the Washburn/Great Divide Unit of the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest, Wisconsin: Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey Technical Report X.
Water table contours for two agricultural regions of Bayfield County were completed for a previous project: Gotkowitz, M.B., and Li, Y., 2016, Groundwater and wells in agricultural regions of Bayfield County, Wisconsin – Report to the Large-Scale Livestock Study Committee: Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey Technical Report 2, 13 p.

Wisconsin Unique Well Number - A 5-character alphanumeric unique identifier assigned to each well construction report submitted to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.
Attribute:
Attribute_Label: Compl_Date
Attribute_Definition:
Completion Date - The date of the completed construction of the well as reported by the well driller to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources
Attribute:
Attribute_Label: Elevation
Attribute_Definition:
Land Surface Elevation of the Well - A value representing the elevation of the data point in feet above mean sea level. The value was extracted to each point from a 5-foot resolution LIDAR-derived DEM. The groundwater elevation in wells, which is calculated using this field, was used to help refine water table contours. The agricultural regions water table map (Gotkowitz and Li, 2016) was developed using older elevation data (DEM derived from the US Geological Survey's 2012 10-meter National Elevation Dataset). The well elevations have been updated in this database. However, the county-wide water table contours that are within the agricultural areas were not updated specifically to account for this change.
Attribute:
Attribute_Label: bottom
Attribute_Definition:
An integer value representing the "bottom" of the well in feet from land surface, or the maximum depth to which the well was drilled, as reported by the well driller on the well construction report.
Attribute:
Attribute_Label: Compl_txt
Attribute_Definition:
Completion text - A text value indicating the primary lithology reported by the driller at the elevation of the well screen. This value was initially populated using the recorded value of the deepest interval. Each well was then checked manually for inconsistencies, such as instances where the deepest geologic layer did not correspond to the well screen elevation.
